Palm Courtyard

This enclosed courtyard is set between buildings and was previously undefined, offering little sense of arrival or purpose. The brief was to create a calm, Mediterranean-inspired courtyard that would feel welcoming, structured and usable throughout the year.

The design combines strong architectural planting with carefully chosen materials, creating a space that feels both composed and relaxed, while respecting the character and enclosure of its setting.

DESIGN APPROACH

The courtyard’s proportions and surrounding stone walls suggested a contained, inward-looking garden. Rather than opening the space up, the design embraces this enclosure, using a clear central axis and strong focal elements to establish calm and order.

The courtyard is organised around a reclaimed three-spout stone fountain, carefully restored and positioned as the central focal point of the space. The gentle movement and sound of water introduce calm and rhythm, anchoring the garden and guiding circulation around it.

The surrounding layout is deliberately restrained, allowing the fountain to take precedence while reinforcing a clear sense of order and balance within the enclosed stone walls.

MATERIALS & PLANTING

Gravel surfaces were introduced to soften the courtyard and improve drainage, while limestone paving defines thresholds, paths and key areas of use. The restrained palette of materials allows the planting and architectural elements to take precedence.

Existing mature palm trees were retained and carefully integrated into the layout, providing vertical structure and a strong Mediterranean character. Raised planting beds were added and planted with a considered mix of shrubs, architectural foliage and grasses, offering texture and year-round interest without overwhelming the space.

A reclaimed metal gate frames the entrance, marking the transition from the surrounding buildings into the courtyard and reinforcing the sense of arrival.

OUTCOME

The completed courtyard now feels composed, atmospheric and welcoming. The balance of structure, planting and water creates a space that is calm yet engaging, offering a strong sense of place within a compact footprint.

The project demonstrates how careful restraint, material consistency and architectural planting can transform an overlooked courtyard into a refined and enduring outdoor room.

If you’re considering a courtyard or enclosed garden that requires sensitivity to architecture and character, we’d be happy to discuss your project.
