Fireplace Garden

This previously overgrown and featureless garden area was reimagined as an intimate evening space for dining, conversation and warmth, centred around a reclaimed 19th-century fireplace.

The brief was to create a setting with atmosphere and presence — somewhere to gather at the end of the day, with fire, planting and stone working together to define the space.

DESIGN APPROACH

The garden offered little structure or identity, despite its generous proportions and surrounding views. Rather than over-complicating the layout, the design focused on introducing a single, strong architectural feature that could anchor the space and give it purpose.

The fireplace was selected as both a visual and social focal point — something that would draw people in, create warmth, and extend the use of the garden into the evening and cooler months..

CONSTRUCTION & LANDSCAPE WORKS

A striking 19th-century stone fireplace was sourced from a reclamation yard and carefully installed to sit naturally within the landscape. Its scale and detailing provide a sense of permanence, while its weathered finish allows it to feel established rather than newly introduced.

Natural stone paving was laid to define dining and seating areas, creating a calm, robust surface that complements the surrounding architecture. Mature olive trees were planted to add structure and instant presence, while a mix of Mediterranean shrubs, perennials and grasses softens the space and brings movement and seasonal change..

OUTCOME

The completed garden now feels purposeful and atmospheric. The fireplace provides warmth and focus, encouraging evening use and informal gatherings, while the planting and stonework create a relaxed Mediterranean character.

The space is equally suited to quiet moments or shared meals, demonstrating how a single reclaimed element, when carefully placed, can transform an overlooked area into a destination within the garden.

If you’re considering a garden space that combines architectural features, planting and atmosphere, we’d be happy to discuss your project.
